duolingo: the free website I use to study German

Duolingo is a free website for learning languages.  Follow me!  I'm timestorm

This is my profile.  I used to study Spanish and Portuguese, too.  These days I only study German~

There are a bunch of different skills, and you get points for learning a skill.

Each skill has different parts, too.
You get points for finishing each one.

Duolingo asks you to translate, make sentences, and it also checks your pronunciation.

There are a lot of languages available, and more coming soon.  I can't wait until I can study Korean with duolingo!

Duolingo keeps track of your progress.  Translating articles gives you points, and also duolingo sells the translations to make money, which keeps it free for me.  Nice!

My Favorite Movie

My favorite movie is Brazil with Jonathan Pryce.  He plays an office worker, and his character’s name is Buttle.  There is a bad man terrorizing society, and his name is Tuttle.  Because of a spelling mistake the police confuse the office worker Buttle for the terrorist Tuttle.  It is a classic case of mistaken identity.  While Buttle is trying to escape from the police, he meets a macho woman who helps him.  She drives a big truck, but Buttle drives a very tiny car.  Jonathan Pryce is a great leading man because he acts on stage and not just in movies.  The movie is set in the future, so it has some science fiction parts, but it is also quite dark and eerie, so it is also kind of film noir.  The bad guy is not a real person, but everyone’s bad attitude.  Buttle tries to get help from his boss, his mother, his high school friends, and finally from strangers.  There is a surprise ending, but I won’t spoil it for you.

Animals

Animals

My family’s house in Texas has a lot of cats.  One cat’s name is Needy.  He is a very big male cat.  Needy wants people to pet him all the time, but when you pet him he drools everywhere, and he also claws people when he is happy.  My house has a tiny door for cats, so the cats can come inside anytime they want.  Other animals could probably use the door, but they never do.  Needy likes to stand right in front of the door so that other cats can’t enter or leave.  My neighbor doesn’t like needy very much, and neither do I.  My neighbor said Needy goes into her house (she also has a cat door), and he bothers her cats.  He is a bully to people and to cats.  Cats, and sometimes hungry birds, eat a lot of food.  Sometimes I wonder how many people we could feed with the money we spend feeding cats.  If I was a hungry person, maybe I would not be happy with people having pets.  To a hungry person the cats look like luxuries.  Or maybe not.

Even though I have not been in Korea as long as others, I have noticed quite a few changes.  One particular area where I have noticed many new developments is in Korea eating habits.  This essay

Korea is a dynamic country that experiences rapid change.  One particular area with many new developments is Korea eating habits.  Some of the reasons for these changes are the pervasiveness of chain restaurants, an increase in health consciousness, and an increase in the cost of staples.

Korea has experience an explosion in chain restaurants.  Restaurants and cafes like Bongoose and Manoffin offer cheap standardized food.  Following in the footsteps of Cafe Benne, and others who have expanded aggressively, these restaurants are everywhere.  Because they have the same products at each branch, and the branches are in convenient places, people don't need to think too much about what to eat.  This "thought convenience" has lead to an increase in the consumption of these types of food.

Other chains have also expanded to become almost ubiquitous.  Chains like Beetle Juice offer standardized products, but their focus is on healthy choices instead of low prices.  This reflects a growing health consciousness in Korea.  There are now many sugar free, gluten free, and soy free products available.  Probably because people prize a thin figure, there has been an increase in health consciousness.

The last reason for a change in eating habits is the increase in the price of staple goods.  Over the past several years the price of vegetables has skyrocketed.  Sometimes meat is cheaper than vegetables, even though we know that it takes much more water and energy to produce meat.  This has lead to people eating less of everything, but especially fresh vegetables.  Whether this is due to bad weather, free trade agreements, or climate change the fact is people are eating less vegetables.

As described above, the most recent changes stem from a change in availability, attitude, and cost.  The changes in Korean eating habits are bound to continue.  Hopefully we can all eat well for the rest of our lives, but there will always be factors that influence our decisions.

hank is a good teacher essay

Hank is a good teacher because

speaks slowly

knows where to find answers

he makes me laugh.

There are many teachers in Swell, and they all have different teaching styles.  One teacher stands out, and his name is Hank.  Hank is a good teacher because he speaks slowly, he knows where to find the answers, and he makes me laugh.

Some teachers may know all the ways to help a student learn, but they speak too quickly for students to understand.  On the other hand, Hank speaks at a speed that students can understand, and he checks their understanding by watching their faces when he talks.  He slowly says things in several different ways to make sure that he is clear.  He says, "Open your book to page 23," and "Turn to page 23," so that everyone can follow along in class with his slow voice.

Hank has a lot of experience teaching English, but sometimes he does not know all the answers.  However, he knows where to find the answers: researching on the internet, looking in textbooks, and asking a co-worker. Because Hank can find the answers for me, I feel comfortable asking him all types of questions.

Hank also makes me laugh.  This is a very important thing for a teacher to do because sometimes studying is not fun.  Noun clauses don't usually make me smile, but when Hank explains them I laugh a lot so I'm able to pay attention for a long time.  Sometimes his jokes are stupid, but overall they are probably his best feature.

We can learn something from everyone, but we can learn so much more from a great teacher.  A teacher like Hank has special skills, as explained above, that make him special.  Because of these reasons, Hank is a good teacher.

my fear of needles

Ever since I was young I have been afraid of needles.  My grandfather was a doctor and my father was always worried about my health.  Sometimes my mom would take me to a doctor and then later my father would take me to my grandfather.  So I felt like I was always going to the doctor.  One time with my grandfather he gave me a bunch of shots, I guess they were vaccinations.  My arm hurt so bad that I didn't want to straighten it, and it kept hurting for days.  I remember playing a baseball game and holding the bat with only one arm.  Our team lost that game, definitely.  Whenever I see a needle, and especially when I see someone get an injection on TV or in a movie, I have to close my eyes because I feel sick.  I can picture the needle inside of my, moving around in my blood.  It feels very similar to being in a car that is about to crash.  So, actually getting poked with a needle is still very frightening to me.  I always have to warn my doctor if he wants to take my blood or give me a shot.  I say something like "I'm afraid of needles, so I might pass out."  Needles are disgusting.  I'm also afraid that they are not clean.   If someone pokes me with a dirty needle, I could get a terrible disease and die.  My skin is closed for a reason, things should not go inside of me, including needles. I really hate needles.
